Mount Sidley – January 2024 (part 1)

11th January 2024 by James Stone Leave a Comment

On 4 January 2024 the first of this year’s two ALE Mount Sidley teams summited.  It looks as though they had perfect weather from start to finish.

There were 11 members of the party, including ALE guides Larry Holmgren and Pedro Binfa (Chile).  Unfortunately one team member had to turn so Pedro Binfa returned to high camp with him and Pedro Binfa did not summit.

The successful summiters were:

  • Larry Holmgren (USA and ALE guide)
  • Ludmila Korobeshko (Russia)
  • Nikolay Tomchak (Russia)
  • Oleg Pipkov (Russia)
  • Evgenii Federov (Russia)
  • Sergei Vasiliev (Russia)
  • Igor Rebelshiy (Russia)
  • Andrey Kravchenko (Russia)
  • Yury Lukyanov (Kazakhstan and the first from that nation to summit Sidley)

The first four Russians in this list also completed the Volcanic Seven Summits with this climb.  Two of the party also only have Ojos del Salado to do to complete the V7S.  One is hoping to achieve this shortly.

The team seems to have had perfect weather for their trip, partly evidenced by the gloveless hands in the photo below!

The current list of Sidley summiters is set out below and the updated list of those who have completed the Volcanic Seven Summits is on the main page for that topic.

I acknowledge the significant assistance provided to me by Ludmila Korobeshko and by David Roskelley in enabling me to collate this information.

Ludmila Korobeshko is a guide with 7 Summits Club. In addition, she has now completed both the Seven Summits, Bass and Messner versions, and the Volcanic Seven Summits so becoming (as far as I am aware) the first female to complete the Seven Summits, Messner version, and the Volcanic Seven Summits.
